1. Are you a yarn snob (do you prefer natural fibers)? Do you avoid Red Heart and Lion Brand? Or is it all the same to you?
I do tend to buy all natural fibers, typically from some of the yarn shops in and around New York City (The Yarn Company and Purl are favorites) or online (KnitPicks and Elann... can't beat nice inexpensive yarn). I use both wool and cotton (love Manos and Blue Sky in particular). I'd like to try some bamboo yarn - the whole concept fascinates me!
2. Do you spin? Crochet?
I don't spin, even though my mom had this dream years ago that she and my sister and I would get sheep and produce our own yarn. I was going to be the designated spinner. I don't crochet, but have really been wanting to try it out.
3. Do you have any allergies? (smoke, pets, fibers, perfume, etc.)
I have a mild allergy to cats and dogs, and I hate the smell of smoke. I don't like heavy fragrances in general, rarely wear perfume... I have a sensitive nose. :)
4. How long have you been knitting?
I learned to knit when I was little, and picked it up again about 3 years ago. I would say I'm an advanced beginner (know the basics really well, starting to move into more complex patterns).
5. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
6. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)
Anything very, very light. I love citrus fragrances, lemon and grapefruit are typical soaps. I love the Origins Ginger line. I also like the L'Occitane Shea Butter line and the Milk soap. I like scented candles, but really don't buy many because my sweetie doesn't like them. The ones I have bought before were from Illuminations, and are food related.
Oh, and I love the Philosophy line of food-scented shower gels, YUM!
7. Do you have a sweet tooth?
Very much so (fortunately or unfortunately!). Chocolate, the darker the better. Any kinds of baked goods, I love baking and try not too eat too much of what I bake.
8. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do?
Ah, where to begin? Anything from Paper Source, from scrapbooks to invitations to paper flower kits. I love Ready Made magazine and finally got myself a subscription. But I love anything crafty really. Making jewelry, decoupage, wirework, pottery, drawing and painting, embroidery, you name it and I like it!!!
9. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
MP3's are fine, and music I like... where to start? My mainstays run the gamut from Peter Mulvey, Jeffrey Foucault, Jack Johnson, Fountains of Wayne, REM, Chieftains, Old Blind Dogs, Lunasa, Erin McKeown, Eddie from Ohio, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Thrills, The Shins, Colin Hay, Paul Simon (old and new, love it all), Nick Drake, the Beatles...
10. What's your favorite color? Or--do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer?
I prefer dark, rich colors (no pastels usually). Chocolate brown is a favorite, black (a NYC requirement really), deep blues, reds, purples. Dark greens are good too, I'm a good Irish girl. I have very pale skin, so I tend towards rich colors as a contrast.
11. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
Married to my sweetie of almost 9 years (we just got married last year... took us awhile!). No pets sadly, he's allergic and anyway landlord says no. But our friends next door have a dog (our 'god dog'), so we get to see him pretty often and he is the cutest. I really would like to knit him a sweater. :)
12. What are your life dreams? (really stretching it here, I know)
Well, just to live a happy, fulfilling life surrounded by loved ones. And getting a job with Jim Henson studios would be nice too. (My niece cracked up when I told her I'd like to work at Jim Henson studios, she thought I was joking. But I'd love to work with puppets - probably designing and building them mostly.)
13. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with?
I'm knitting with Manos cotton at the moment (making Tempting from Knitty). I love Manos wool too, they have great color choices. Debbie Bliss Cashmerino is another favorite. I have alot of yarns I want to try out, especially bamboo and maybe treat myself to something really soft and dreamy like cashmere to make the cowl in Last Minute Knitted Gifts.
14. What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I don't like anything really scratchy. Unless I was making a dog sweater or dishcloths, I probably wouldn't use acrylic... but who knows, if it worked for the project. I like the idea of novelty yarns, but I really don't use them much.
15. What is/are your current knitting obsession/s?
I'm working on Tempting from Knitty... and am hoping I can get the sizing right (I still haven't made an honest-to-goodness sweater!) I'd like to try instarsia, maybe as a felted purse decoration. I'd love to make a shrug, just haven't committed to one of the patterns from the new Interweave. And I'm enjoying lace as well... I started the I Do shrug from Knitty but ended up frogging it so I could use the yarn for Tempting.
16. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
Scarves, bags, blankets... simple and fast knits. But I'm enjoying getting into larger projects, more fitted pieces. I like quirky projects too.
17. What are you knitting right now?
As I mentioned above, Tempting from Knitty. Also, finishing up a felted bag. I also whipped out a quick, super long drop stitch scarf from Blue Sky Cotton that I love... I wear it at work.
18. What do you think about ponchos?
Like em... though I think shrugs are the new ponchos.
19. Do you prefer straight or circular needles?
Buying a set of Denise interchangable circular needles has sold me on the wonders of circular needles, but I still like straight needles too.
20. Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
Bamboo or plastic, never metal. Yeesh, I hate knitting with metal needles, drives me nuts.
21. Are you a sock knitter?
Not really. I got some beautiful sock yarn from my previous SP, and am working on learning to use dpns.
22. How did you learn to knit?
23. How old is your oldest UFO?
Not that old, maybe a year. A tank top in a beautiful orange cashmerino... I ran out of yarn so I stopped.
24. What is your favorite animated character or a favorite animal/bird?
Hmmm, this is a tough one. One of my favorite animated characters, Emmet, is from an old Muppet special, Emmet Otters Jug Band Christmas. As far as animals go, I like cats, small cute dogs (though I do like all dogs), otters, prairie dogs, seals and sea lions, penguins. I like lots of animals. :)
25. What is your favorite holiday?
Hmmm... St. Patrick's Day. Lots of Irish music concerts to go to, and close to my birthday.
26. Is there anything that you collect?
I'm a pack rat, but I don't have any official collections. I do like old food-related posters, postcards, signs, etc. I tend to collect craft supplies, stocking up on embroidery floss for when I want to embroider, crayons and markers and paper. I have alot of the Moleskeine notebooks... does that count as a collection? :^)
27. What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
Just Interweave Knits. I have so many other magazine subscriptions that one knitting mag is enough for now!
28. Any books out there you are dying to get your hands on?
Well, my Amazon wish list always has a few books on it. There's a great crochet book on there that I saw in Paper Source in Boston that I'd love. Plus there's some non-knitting books on there too, there's always a cookbook or two I have a hankering for. We're a real book household!
